Quando nel 1996 apparve il film Shine, del registra australiano Scott Hicks, la richiesta di dischi con il Concerto n. 3 di Rachmaninov crebbe a tal punto che non pochi negozi allestirono un palchetto con bene in vista il cartello “Rach 3”. Il film raccontava la vicenda di un ragazzo a cui un ambizioso padre-padrone violento e brutale aveva imposto come prova di dedizione filiale di studiare prematuramente il Terzo Concerto, di un ragazzo che ci aveva provato con tutte le sue forze e che, non riuscendo nell’impresa, era caduto in uno stato di prostrazione nervosa tale da richiedere lunghi e ripetuti ricoveri in cliniche psichiatriche. Il protagonista ormai maturo d’anni veniva poi “risanato” da un’infermiera che lo sposava, e iniziava con successo la carriera. Questa vicenda non era di pura invenzione ma trasferiva sullo schermo, romanzandola, la storia del pianista australiano David Helfgott. Il film ottenne uno straordinario successo sia perché era un prodotto che miscelava abilmente temi drammaturgici cari al pubblico, sia perché il ruolo del padre-padrone era sostenuto da Armin Müller-Stahl, che in un altro film di grande successo uscito cinque anni prima, Musical box, aveva impersonato la bieca figura di un nazista torturatore e assassino. Inoltre, il maestro che, senza esserne troppo convinto, cercava di insegnare al ragazzo il Rach 3 era tratteggiato con grande efficacia istrionica da Sir John Gielgud. E così il film spopolò e David Helfgott venne invitato a suonare in tutto il mondo, dimostrando soltanto di non essere all’altezza né del Rach 3, né di altri pezzi di grande impegno. Chi avesse la curiosità di sentirla troverà tuttavia in disco la sua esecuzione del Terzo di Rachmaninov, sotto la direzione di Milan Horvat. È veramente così difficile, il Concerto n. 3 di Rachmaninov? È certamente difficile, ma non pochi ragazzini di dodici-tredici anni riescono a venir a capo della miriade di note che contiene. La sua vera, la sua autentica difficoltà non risiede in realtà nelle note ma, come dirò poi, nel modo in cui si suonano. Rachmaninov, che aveva alla fine “sfondato” nella vita concertistica internazionale con il Concerto n. 2, all’inizio del 1909 venne invitato negli Stati Uniti, dove non era mai stato. Del Concerto n. 1 scritto a diciott’anni non si fidava, e il Concerto n. 2 era già noto anche in America, dov’era stato eseguito da vari pianisti. Per il successo della tournée sembrava dunque consigliabile sbarcar negli States con un nuovo concerto, scritto appositamente. E così Rachmaninov si mise a comporre il Concerto n. 3, che fu scritto fra l’ultima decade di maggio e l’estate. Terminato il pezzo, bisognava studiarlo. Rachmaninov lo lavorò un po’ a casa e poi, molto, nel viaggio in transatlantico, su una tastiera muta. Arrivato a New York ai primi di novembre, Rachmaninov iniziò la tournée con dei recital di musiche sue e suonando il Concerto n. 2 in cinque città degli Stati Uniti e a Toronto. Il 28 e il 30 novembre presentò il Concerto n. 3 a New York, sotto la direzione di Walter Damrosch. Il pubblico, che s’aspettava una replica del malioso Concerto n. 2, restò deluso, la critica fu arcigna. Noi sappiamo, perché abbiamo di lui molti dischi, come suonava Rachmaninov dopo il 1920, ma non sappiamo come suonava prima. Già all’esordio a New York un critico aveva osservato che il suo suono non eccelleva per bellezza e varietà. Un altro scrisse che molti pianisti avrebbero potuto rendere la parte solistica del Concerto n. 3 meglio dell’autore. Insomma, i calcoli di Rachmaninov si dimostrarono sbagliati alla verifica dei fatti, e il suo nuovo concerto non ottenne la rivincita nemmeno quando, il 16 gennaio 1910, fu nuovamente eseguito sotto la direzione di Gustav Mahler. E sì che la preparazione curata da Mahler era stata meticolosissima. Vent’anni più tardi Rachmaninov avrebbe ricordato in questi termini l’episodio: «Sebbene la prova fosse programmata fino alle 12.30 continuammo a lavorare ben oltre questo termine, e quando Mahler disse che bisognava ripetere il primo tempo mi aspettavo proteste o scenate dai professori d’orchestra, ma non notai il minimo segno di fastidio. L’orchestra risuonò il primo tempo con grande e persino maggior impegno di prima».
Tornato in Europa, Rachmaninov suonò il Concerto n. 3 a Mosca in aprile e in novembre, a San Pietroburgo nel febbraio del 1911, a Londra e a Liverpool in autunno. Il solo Samuil Feinberg, studente nel conservatorio di Mosca, scelse il Terzo per il suo esame di diploma, nessun pianista celebre, nemmeno il dedicatario Josef Hofmann,
lo mise in repertorio, e Rachmaninov continuò a girare con il graditissimo Secondo che il pubblico non si stancava di ascoltare. L’inizio della popolarità del Concerto n. 3 fu dovuto alle esecuzioni di Horowitz alla fine degli anni venti. Gieseking alla fine degli anni Trenta e Gilels negli anni Cinquanta, oltre a Horowitz, contribuirono a far definitivamente accettare il pezzo, che verso il 1980 divenne il mito dei giovani pianisti, succedendo, se così si può dire, al Concerto n. 2 di Brahms che aveva turbato i sonni ed abitato i sogni dei loro padri.
Se si eccettua il Concerto di Busoni, che appartiene ad una ristrettissima minoranza di interpreti, non c’è concerto, per lo meno tra quelli in repertorio, più difficile del Secondo di Brahms e del Terzo di Rachmaninov. L’ordine di difficoltà è però diverso: il Concerto n. 2 di Brahms non si cura del povero pianista, messo di fronte a passi dall’impeccabile logica musicale ma tastieristicamente scomodissimi (“perversioni pianistiche”, li chiama Alfred Brendel), mentre il Concerto n. 3 di Rachmaninov esalta il pianista, il pianista, però, al quale sono richieste le doti di una étoile della danza. In altre parole, Brahms discende da Beethoven, Rachmaninov discende dal cosiddetto Biedermeier della prima metà dell’Ottocento (Hummel, Moscheles, Kalkbrenner, e per vari aspetti Chopin), da un Biedermeier che all’orchestra ha assegnato un ruolo di coprotagonista invece che di caudataria ma che non ha rinnegato un principio basilare: più il solista suona, meglio è. E di note il solista ne suona tante, nel Concerto n. 3 di Rachmaninov. Non ha neppure, salvo che nel secondo tempo, le esposizioni e i collegamenti in cui l’orchestra viaggia da sola, lasciando tirare il fiato al pianista sovraccaricato di impegni.
L’estetica del concerto si modella qui sull’estetica del melodramma contemporaneo, perché l’opera di fine Ottocento ignora i pertichini, quei personaggi secondari, come Alisa nella Lucia di Lammermoor o Ines nel Trovatore, che, mettendo il becco nelle esternazioni del personaggio principale consentono a questi – cioè al cantante che lo impersona – di ben distendere i muscoli della gola prima di attaccare le acrobazie della cabaletta. L’orchestra di Rachmaninov, folta e densa, tende spesso a mangiarsi il suono del pianoforte, tanto che il pianista deve sottoporsi ad uno sforzo fisico non di poco conto, suonando a seconda dei casi con prevalenza del “peso” o con prevalenza di azione muscolare. Si tratta di due atteggiamenti del corpo diversi, ma Rachmaninov chiede al pianista di passare dall’uno all’altro senza preparazione. Del resto, conveniamone, Verdi risparmia forse Otello, costretto ad iniziare il primo atto con il grido stentoreo dell’Esultate e a finirlo con l’estasi di Venere splende? Wagner risparmia forse Sigfrido, risparmia forse Brunilde? Rachmaninov non risparmia il pianista perché vuole che al pianoforte ci sia un dio. I pianisti degli anni Dieci dissero “grazie, no”, i pianisti di un secolo dopo sono terribilmente tentati dal misurare se stessi sul Terzo.
Ed è dura. Perché Rachmaninov, al contrario ad esempio di un Hummel o di un Kalkbrenner, non vuole solo il virtuosismo, ma vuole per soprammercato che il virtuosismo sia lirico, non meccanico. Enrico Cecchetti, grande ballerino e soprattutto grande maître de ballet che negli anni a cavallo fra Ottocento e Novecento lavorò a lungo in Russia, dirigeva le lezioni di riscaldamento dei suoi poulains gridando in continuazione “cantare il passo”. E questa era anche la regola della scuola pianistica russa che nel Concerto n. 3 di Rachmaninov trovava il suo culmine. Horowitz e Gilels e lo stesso Rachmaninov nel disco che di lui abbiamo (e Gieseking, sia pure con molte imprecisioni di dettaglio) erano liricamente dei vulcani. E questo, al di là delle moltissime note che anche i ragazzini riescono oggi a dipanare, è il vero scoglio del Concerto n. 3, lo scoglio su cui i giovani pianisti si lanciano, sicuri di schivarlo all’ultimo momento. Qualche volta ci riescono, altre no. Ma la sfida al Rach 3 sprigiona oggi la potenza seduttiva di un canto di sirene.

"During my trip to Paris, I came up with the idea of a new symphony based on a programme, which must, however, remain secret from everyone, a programme so well concealed that no one will be able to reveal it, even if they should break their heads. This programme reflects my innermost feelings. On the road, while I was mentally composing, I burst into tears more than once, as if in despair. On my return, I started writing and worked so hard that in less than four days I completed the first movement, while the others are already clearly defined in my brain.
These heartfelt words of the Russian musician, taken from a February 1893 letter to his nephew Bob, give an idea of the extent to which, in the second half of the 19th century, the humanitarian, libertarian and cosmopolitan ideal of Beethoven's symphony was romantically enclosed within a subjective vision, and in the present case even became a musical self-portrait, or rather an intimate and unrevealable diary. This composition - one of the best-known and best-loved in the repertoire - to which the composer wanted to add the subtitle Patetičeskaja (as the heading of the manuscript reveals), has a funereal aura about it, linked to mournful biographical circumstances. The Sixth Symphony was in fact the last page written by Tchaikovsky, who conducted it for the first time in St Petersburg on 16 October 1893. The playbill for that concert of the Russian Music Association did not yet include the famous subtitle, which at first was supposed to be Tragic, and later became Pathetic, it seems, at the suggestion of Modest, the musician's brother and later his unreliable biographer. Tchaikovsky, who was not without a spirit of self-criticism at times, showed particular esteem for his Sixth Symphony: "I consider it, of all that I have written so far, my best work: and I know that it is, above all, the most sincere. I love it as I have never loved any of my musical parts". It is also possible that the disappointment at the lack of success of a work in which the author firmly believed was the indirect cause of Tchaikovsky's dramatic end. According to tradition, the musician committed suicide shortly afterwards by drinking infected water; but according to more recent revelations, he did so under pressure from a group of comrades from the School of Law, who, by bringing him a cyanide-based potion, persuaded him to avoid by death the scandal of an accusation against him for homosexuality, at the time punished by deportation and confiscation of property, damaging to the good name of the school itself. He was only fifty-three years old.

At one of the two concerts commemorating Tchaikovsky's death, maestro Eduard Nápravník conducted the Patetica, which since then, probably also in relation to the circumstances surrounding its birth, has been considered a mournful work, a kind of colourful Requiem: in the Soviet Union it was still performed at the funerals of great figures. The use, incidentally, does not seem too appropriate to us, since the Patetica, rather than a choral funeral lament, seems to be a complacent song of despair, full of exasperated sentimental effusions, oratorical rhetoric and disturbing neurotic outbursts of a man subjugated by despair. It is perhaps not difficult to speculate as to what, in this parable of romantic pathos, are the "most intimate feelings" Tchaikovsky referred to, concerned about their anonymity. The musician, hypersensitive and desirous of affection, had an unhappy existential situation in the sphere of love - a failed marriage, most probably the burden of an uncomfortable homosexuality for those times - and his sentimental needs, his need for love were not fully satisfied. Moreover, at the time of the writing of the Pathetique, the support, not only financial, of his friend and patron Nadežda Filaretovna von Meck was also lacking.

Formally, the Patetica is an atypical symphony. Compared to Tchaikovsky's earlier symphonies, it lacks the recurring theme that characterised the Fourth and Fifth Symphonies. Moreover, in a departure from symphonic custom, the Sixth Symphony includes a slow movement at the end of the work. This is the stroke of genius, the revolutionary idea that embodies Tchaikovsky's passive pessimism and personal
decadentism. Many years ago, discussing with the late critic Massimo Mila the advisability of applauding between one piece and another in a concert, the famous critic from Turin was in favour of the 19th-century custom of clapping between the tempos of a symphony: "There are cases - he said - in which applause comes spontaneously. Think of the Pathetique: who can imagine that after the Scherzo there is still all that moaning...'. These are the words of a relentless detractor of Tchaikovsky, but they render well the formal reasoning of the musician. His artistic conscience, often paid for by superficial and clamorous effects, was oriented a little also in the Pathetique in this direction. The Scherzo (Allegro molto vivace), in the rhythm of a pressing march, is given a conclusion with the character of a "grand finale": an illusory triumph, since, after silencing the applauders, it plunges into the black depression of the famous Adagio lamentoso. The contrast is so successful that it prompted Mahler - a musician who owes something, even in Stravinsky's opinion, to Tchaikovsky - to adopt, very broadly speaking, a similar form in his Ninth Symphony.

The Pathetique is thus endowed with a cyclical form, in which the two extreme movements are similar, while the two central ones, although different, constitute a diversion that enhances the languishing tone of the page. If Baudelaire saw in Wagner's Tannhäuser a melodic invention drawn from "the entire dictionary of the onomatopoeias of love", similarly in the Pathetique one can see at least a rich sample of the onomatopoeias of despair, lament and weeping. The introduction (Adagio) to the first movement serves, in its brevity, as a sorrowful epigraph to the symphony. The Allegro non troppo that follows uses the same theme, which is very brief, almost in the form of an aside, in a faster tempo. It is developed and varied with "passeggiati" and "progressions" until it reaches a considerable dramatic temperature, which then fades out to make way for the second theme. This is an Andante with a persuasive melody, almost operetta-like, still mentioned in the brief form of an epigraph, which then becomes a Moderato mosso, less heartfelt in character. Once again the theme reaches an incandescent dramatic climax, only to fade away now in an exhausting, endless diminuendo, culminating in a pianissimo by the bassoon with six P's. With a resounding coup de théâtre, the development section of this first movement begins: a terrifying fortissimo explodes, from which, in a convulsive atmosphere, a belligerent fugato departs. In the long run, this outburst of sudden anger also degrades into funereal moods: with grandiloquence, the trombones take on the task of mimicking the composer's sinking into depression. The second theme, the "consolatory" one, is taken up again, varied and inflated, until, after yet another thematic extinction, a slow march concludes the movement.
The second half (Allegro con grazia) is a kind of dance scene full of refrains, in which luxury, pomp and aristocratic manners are combined in a page that constitutes a kind of diversion. The 5/4 time signature is curious, and also remains in the plaintive Trio, where Tchaikovsky notes "with sweetness and faintness". Even the coda, after the restart, has something of a funereal quality.

The Scherzo (Allegro molto vivace), which, as in some of Šostakovič's symphonies, is without a Trio, has an irresistible rhythm. Perhaps he inherited the idea of the Scherzo's pounding rhythm from Beethoven's Ninth, which is, however, accompanied by a Trio. Here, however, there is an uninterrupted chain of effect crescendos, pointing relentlessly towards the "false ending" mentioned above. In the very long coda, full of varied harmonies, swirling figurations, instrumental flashes and virile scansion, Tchaikovsky poses as a muscular Titan. The page, which always leaves you breathless, ends with the same figuration (upbeat triplet) used in the last bars of the Fifth Symphony.
Having thrown away the mask, the composer starts again with his exhausting alternation of despair and consolation, but in this Finale (Adagio lamentoso) there is no way out: the second theme - the consolatory one, performed "with sweetness and devotion", as Tchaikovsky's interpretation suggests - turns in on itself, transforming itself into a dark funeral march, the only possible epilogue to the Patetica.
