Of this program it is fair to wonder whether the Jeunehomme Concerto No. 9 is among the favorites of a great performer like Maria João Pires because of that freshness that can be sensed from the first phrases exchanged between piano and orchestra, as if they had to come to an agreement before the music could begin. Over the course of her long career, the Portuguese pianist has become a specialist of Mozart concertos, of that dialogue with the orchestra in which she is from time to time interlocutor, principal singer, voice-over or embroiderer of precious motifs.
Gianandrea Noseda, among the leading conductors of his generation and an ever-present host on the Filarmonica's podium, places Igor Stravinsky's L'oiseaux de Feu, the complete version of the ballet written between 1909 and 1910, alongside the 21-year-old Mozart's masterpiece. The slow approach, in the design of the strings, of that subterranean tension that will vent in the clash between the firebird and the magician Katschej is among the Russian composer's most memorable incipits.
