BIOGRAPHY

Riccardo Chailly is Music Director of Teatro alla Scala and Principal Conductor of Filarmonica della Scala. Since 2016 he has taken over as Music Director of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, succeeding Claudio Abbado. He was Kapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Principal Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, which he led for sixteen years.

He conducts major international orchestras, including the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is a regular guest at festivals such as Salzburg and BBC Proms in London.

Riccardo Chailly's operatic career includes numerous productions at Teatro alla Scala, the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the San Francisco Opera, Covent Garden in London, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and the Zurich Opera.  

Riccardo Chailly has been an exclusive Decca artist for over 30 years, which released a box set in 2018 containing 55 CDs of recordings with leading international orchestras to celebrate 40 years of collaboration. Recent accolades from his more than 150 recordings include the Gramophone Award as Record of the Year for the complete Brahms Symphonies and two Echo Classics in 2012 and 2015. In 2020 he received the Diapason d'Or as Artist of the Year for his latest recordings with Filarmonica della Scala and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. His recording activity with Filarmonica della Scala, after the disc Viva Verdi made on the occasion of Verdi's bicentennial, resumed in 2017 with Overtures, Preludes and Intermezzos of operas that had their premiere at La Scala. The latest releases are The Fellini Album in 2019, Cherubini Discoveries and Respighi in 2020, and Musa Italiana in 2021.
