BIOGRAPHY

After graduating from the G. Verdi Conservatory in Milan in organ and harpsichord, he embarked on a concert career at a very young age, becoming one of the most highly regarded harpsichordists of his generation.

In1985 he received the basso continuo prize at the International Competition in Paris, and in 1986 he was a prizewinner at the International Competition in Bruges. He is the first Italian to win these awards internationally in the harpsichord field.

A profound connoisseur of the performance practice of the Baroque period, since 1996 he has been the Artistic and Musical Conductor of the Accademia Bizantina of Ravenna, with which he has collaborated since 1989. Since 2021 he has been Conductor principal of the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano andTrento and has been appointed Conductor music of the Innsbruck Early MusicFestival starting in 2024.

Under his direction the Accademia Bizantina has established itself as one of the best-known and most sought-after Baroque music ensembles with ancient instruments on the international scene.

His career has led him to juxtapose the best-known repertoire with the rediscovery of lesser-performed or first modern performance titles in the world's most important festivals and theaters including Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Berlin Staatsoper, SalzburgFestival, Glyndebourne Festival, Teatro Real inMadrid, Opéra de Paris, Zurich Oper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, London Proms, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall, Barbican Centre, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Pierre Boulez Saal, Kölner Philharmonie, Walt Disney Hall, and many others.

He is regularly invited to conduct the most prestigious international symphony orchestras, including Filarmonica della Scala, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre National du Capitole in Toulouse Staatskapelle Berlin, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Orchestra Sinfonica della RAI in Turin and others.

He has recorded, both as a soloist and as Conductor, for the most important record companies-Decca, Deutsche Grammophon, Naïve and Harmonia Mundi-gaining awards and recognition from international critics. In 2020 he was appointed Commendatore dell''Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana by President Sergio Mattarella. Since 2022 he has been an Academician of Santa Cecilia.
