CONDUCTOR
BIOGRAPHY

Lorenzo Viotti is the new Music Conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Dutch National Opera. He will take up the post from the 2021-22 season, succeeding the current Conductor Marc Albrecht, whose mandate expires at the end of the next season.

Thefirst time I saw Lorenzo Viotti conducting a symphonic concert I was immediately impressed by the special connection and chemistry he was able to share with the musicians to create a unique experience in music making," said Sophie de Lindt, director of the Dutch National Opera. "Later, when I witnessed the preparation of Werther at the Zurich Opera, it was immediately clear that he would be the ideal musical partner at the Dutch National Opera. Rob Streevelaar, Conductor operations of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, was also very positive: "It is an inspiring Conductor , which has proven itself more than worthy of the podiums and the most important opera houses."

Son of the late Conductor conductor Marcello Viotti, 29-year-old Lorenzo Viotti studied piano, singing and percussion in Lyon before turning to the study of music direction in Vienna with Georg Mark and later in Weimar with Nicolìas Pasquet. After winning the Nestlé Competition for Young Conductors in Salzburg in 2015, Lorenzo Viotti's international career took off with invitations to such prestigious orchestras as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, the BBC Philharmonic in Manchester, the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, the Munchner Philharmoniker, the Dresden Staatskapelle, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the Staatskapelle in Berlin, and Filarmonica della Scala della Scala. Alongside his symphonic activity, Viotti is also very active in the operatic repertoire with engagements at the Stuttgart Staatsoper, Semperoper Dresden, Oper Frankfurt, Zurich Opernhaus, Opéra national de Paris and New National Theatre in Tokyo. Among future engagements, Viotti will also be at Teatro alla Scala for Roméo et Juliette and Thaïs. Lorenzo Viotti is currently Conductor principal of the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon.
