After preparing as much as possible, the important thing is to let go of all illusions of control and react instinctively to the sound of the orchestra. Pablo Heras-Casado, Conductor a Spaniard among the most sought-after of his generation, trusts his intuition. He is equally at home with the large orchestra and chamber ensemble, with opera and contemporary, and for his concert with Filarmonica della Scala he presents for the first time in the season the Concert Românesc, a tribute to György Ligeti whose birth centenary it is. Ligeti pours into this piece his love for traditional Romanian songs, recorded in the field and included in the composition while trying to evade censorship (unsuccessfully).
Shy and reserved offstage, in concert Jan Lisiecki closes his eyes and participates in the music with his whole self. The determination of his musical ideas is what has enabled him to show himself to the world as an extraordinarily mature performer for his age, at only 13. He is now 27, and Ludwig van Beethoven, whose Third Concerto in C minor he performs, is a composer he devotes himself to on a par with Fryderyk Chopin, who made him famous.
