TENOR
BIOGRAPHY

Tenor. Born in Lima, he began singing and playing rock and Peruvian folk music as a child; he later studied at the National Conservatory of Peru and then obtained a scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In 1996 he made his debut at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro as Corradino in Shabran's Matilde. At the age of twenty-three he made his debut at La Scala in Armide conducted by Riccardo Muti and has since performed in the most prestigious venues and with the greatest conductors. In 2007 he marked a historic moment at La Scala, offering - this had not happened since 1933 - an encore of "Ah! Mes amis," the famous aria from Fille du regiment that contains nine C's in chest: an encore later requested also at the Metropolitan in New York and the Paris Opéra. He returned to La Scala several times, as Don Ramiro (Cinderella, 2005), Rodrigo (Rossini's Otello, 2015) and Orphée (Orphee et Euridice, 2018) and participated in the inaugural performance of the 2020-2021 Season ... a riveder le stelle. Famous for his bel canto roles, in recent years he has expanded his repertoire to include works of French Romanticism. Lately he has been Raoul de Nangis (Les Huguenots) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Gennaro (Lucrezia Borgia) at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and in concert version at the Salzburg Festival, Hoffmann (Les contes d'Hoffmann) at the Opéra de Monte- Carlo, Ricciardo (Ricciardo and Zoraide) at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Alfredo (La traviata) at the Metropolitan in New York, Des Grieux (Manon) and Faust in the opera of the same name at the Vienna Staatsoper, Rodolfo (La bohème) at the Zurich Opera. He has recorded a CD of Mozart arias and one of popular Latin American songs, Besame mucho. Among the many awards he has received are the Gran Cruz de la Orden El Sol of Peru and the title of "Österreichischer Kammersänger." In 2011 he founded "Sinfonía por el Peru," a social project inspired by Venezuela's "El Sistema," to foster the artistic and individual development of children and young people. For this initiative in 2012 he was appointed UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and in 2014 received the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum.
