From April 22 to June 16, 2023, the Brescia and Bergamo International Piano Festival celebrates its 60th anniversary in its year as the Italian Capital of Culture with a program that focuses on overcoming boundaries and prejudices with respect to twentieth-century music. The thematic path of the second part of Novecento Suite-a key feature of the Piano Festival's identity-is based on a carefully selected repertoire of more than 30 composers. The 60th Festival is dedicated to the Anti Avant-Garde, understood as the search for those composers who have been able to speak a contemporary language in the 21st century, often ostracized by militant critics, but whose success has been decreed by time (and especially by the public), from the Russia of Rachmaninov, Šostakovič, and Prokofiev, to the America of Bernstein, but also of Adams and Rzewski.
The inaugurations are joined by two special Concerts dedicated to the Capital of Culture that will bring to the two theaters the Filarmonica della Scala conducted by Riccardo Chailly-a guest at the Festival last time in 2019 on the occasion of the extraordinary concert for the Canonization of Paul VI-with soloist Mao Fujita, a young Japanese pianist making his debut at the Festival, in 2019 a silver medalist at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition. The programs in the two cities are distinct: in Brescia, Rachmaninov's Third Concerto and Tchaikovsky's famous 'Patetica'; in Bergamo alongside Rachmaninov's Third Concerto, Stravinsky's Chant funébre and Prokofiev's Symphony No. 7.
